That knocked Cowell off his pedestal as the majority of the general record buying public stuck their fingers up to Cowell and the X-Factor machine.
Is RATM the best song going? It’s listenable though I wouldn’t go bonkers over it. What I do go bonkers over is that the mindless pap of Cowley/Cyrus was kicked into the gutter – Cowell will have to go back to the drawing board on what X-Factor is ABOUT and its commercial strategy.
This was also a backlash against the presumed zeitgeist that in the words of x-factor fans – `everybody’s interested in x-factor` – no we’ were not. In fact I became increasingly sick of the manipulated psychodramas trying to cover up the crap that was coming out as `music`. I simply don’t understand anymore why people listen to singers doing badly at worst or adequately at best other artists covers.
Also, I think that Joe McElderrey’s comments about `Christmas songs should be great for grannies and RATM is not`and `I’m not Gay you know – just haven’t found the right girl` were the final straws that goaded people to buy the record – people like me who for the first time downloaded their first single from itunes.
For most this was a statement about Cowell – he’s had a carefully crafted commercial formula – like the spider at the centre of a web cashing in the money – you know string out x-factor with psychodramas and more voting cash – make sure the final is the week before the Christmas charts and hey presto it all goes swimmingly.
That SYSTEM has been blown to smithereens and now Cowell will have to work harder at x-factor in 2010. Less shows? Songs that are `hidden gems` being covered that will challenge the public? or even gasp! new songs?
RATM was so much more than about the ramshackle yet spirited song with appropriate lyrics. It was for many giving King Cowell the kicking he deserved. Musically, the past few months have reminded me of Marx as it has not so much been religion but X-Factor as the opium of the masses. Those that haven’t succumbed to the drug gave their voice – and those that wanted to turn off the drug support have had their way.
The message is clear – COWELL MUST WORK HARDER and rebuild peoples trust.
