It’s Anne or Richard for me

Although I’m happy to be persuaded otherwise it’s both anyone but Beckett and a big tick for Anne Widdicombe and Richard Shepherd. Anne as Speaker and Richard as deputy would make my day.

Anne would command respect with voters which is crucially important as they’ll listen to what she has to say when she says things that the papers won’t print – ie that they show a caricature of parliament rather than the full truth. Shepherd is untainted by the expenses scandal and I believe has reform and the grinding tenacity for neutrality that a speaker should have.

Other than that I’d go for Micheal Lord, George Young or Alan Beith
