Eurovision 1983: What was good about it?

1983 was a year of treading water with no real new ground covered – the songs, to my ear, were either very good or dire. The UK carried on with the kind of quality galloping`British Eurovision Pop`of Bucks Fizz and Bardo while Sweden presented  Carola Haggkvist who still dominates Swedish Eurovision Pop to this day coming 5th in 2007.

Yugoslavija (as it was then) entered a chirpy number while Israel carried on with the `Anthemic Hebrew Pop` from 1982 with someone called Ofra Haza! Belgium was the odd one out with its 80s experimentation

It's the kind of music that goes well with a `Hermes salesgirl in Selfridges`

while Germany and Luxembourg performed the only two quality ballads of the evening the latter  taking the spoils. The winner seemed to sum up this contest – safe and just following trends.
